The Risk of Easter

Holy Week is the one time every year that we are invited to sit in the dark. Darkness, as it turns out, is pretty good at making us value the Light. That’s why those who join us tomorrow evening for our Maundy Thursday service (6:30) will spend some time in the dark. Similarly, our somber Good Friday service (at noon) will seek to move you ever closer to that hill on which Jesus died a most gruesome death…for you.

Yes, Easter is personal. The risk of Easter is that you allow bunnies, bonnets, and boiled eggs to capture the day. For the follower of Jesus, Easter is the most personal moment of the year. Easter remembers both Jesus’ victory over death and the moment our every error, bad decision, harsh word, self-serving act, and what the Bible calls “sin” gets washed away. Paul tells the Roman Church that the “wages (stipend or required payment) of sin is death.” (Rom 6:23) There is no amount of service, good deeds, good trouble, or good works that can atone for your sin. These are the behaviors of the forgiven, but do not lead to forgiveness. You and I need a Savior. Period. Dot.

May the Spirit of our risen Savior lead you to a fully personal experience of resurrection!

Happy Easter to you and yours! He is risen!
