Arts in worship

People experience God's presence in many ways. It could be in the music, the setting of the worship space, through art, and even through movies.

In our services, you'll find that there will be various elements used to support the sermon's message. For those who are auditory learners, you'll find that our worship songs reflect the message of the day. For those who are more visual, we often display pictures in worship of either the Biblical place, or an artist's rendering. We show maps when we need to get a sense of the distance and we have even shown clips from movies that tie the Biblical message into the lives of today. We are multi-sensory worshippers.

Music
Music at Westminster is varied, inspiring, and accessible to all. There are different styles of music to complement your worship experience. The Traditional Music introduces a broad spectrum of orchestra and classical musical styles. The Chancel Choir performs two major concerts a year. In the summer of 2008, the choir will travel to Scotland to perform. Our contemporary music brings many songs familiar on the radio to highlight the sermon message. The Worship Band concerts are always well attended. Music is taught to children, youth, and adults. Each summer Westminster offers a week-long, half-day Music Camp for children in kindergarten through 5th grade. Our youth have their own worship band with musicians and singers. They are mentored by our music staff and volunteers with musical backgrounds. Read more about music in worship ...

Dance
Scripture gives examples of how dance is a joyous celebration and form of worship. A dancer's movements and gestures suggests rhythms, ideas, and feelings -- much like music does. Liturgical dance is meant to embody a scriptural message and enriches the worshipping atmosphere. Read more about dance in worship ...

Drama
From dramatic reading to mini-dramas, actors uses their talents to bring the scripture message into 3-D form. In services you may hear actors reading the scripture rather than a minister. The Westminster Players also perform full-length plays such as Pilate on the Beach, and a re-enactment of the Last Supper, as well as original-written works such as "Women's Voices".  Read more about drama in worship ...

Visual Arts
The worship space is enhanced by liturgical arts. The worship spaces are sometimes decorated with pottery, tapestry, and other items or displays that "set the table" for worship. Artwork also is periodically displayed during song, scripture, or sermon to visually illustrate the scripture meaning.

Technology

Technology
During worship, maps, images of works of art to use of movie snippets may be used to illustrate a sermon message. Read more about the use of technology in worship.
