Shabbat and the Garden Tomb

Saturday is the Jewish Sabbath. Many of us chose to forgo the usual 6:30 a.m. wake-up all and sleep in on this day. It was a nice change of pace. The notion of a day of rest, and the religious significance of such a practice, seems widely accepted and practiced in Israel (at least based on our one Shabbat in Jerusalem during this trip.) Beginning at sundown on Friday until sundown Saturday, shops, restaurants and other businesses are closed. Even television networks suspend their broadcasts during this time, merely displaying the picture of a candle for Shabbat. This surely encourages people to attend synagogue services and practice their faith with their loved ones at home. Come sundown on Saturday, business resumes. Many shops and restaurants are open late that night.
