Interfaith Hospitality Network
Many families and companies have struggled with the economic turmoil that began in 2008 and Guilford Interfaith Hospitality Network has not been spared from the same ill effects. Semi-annual fund raisers have had fewer participants and raised fewer funds over the last three years as assistance available from government sources and private foundations has decreased. At a called meeting of the Board on May 3, 2011, the regional director of Family Promise, GIHN’s umbrella organization, recommended a 4- to 6-month hiatus from hosting homeless families. There are presently 162 networks operating nationwide and several have experienced the same financial crisis and have emerged stronger after a similar break. The real tragedy of this situation is that the churches have fulfilled their role by providing shelter, hospitality and meals for the families. The board has now identified the areas it needs to address to sustain the organization and fulfill its mission to help homeless families regain independence.
