Local Gleaning & Harvest of Hope Weekends
When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very edges of your field, or gather the gleanings of your harvest…You shall leave them for the poor and alien. Leviticus 19: 9 & 10.
Gleaning is a traditional Biblical concept that puts volunteers into the fields and orchards to pick the fruits and vegetables that remain after harvest. One-quarter of all fresh food grown in the USA rots or is plowed under each year. This is enough food to feed all the hungry people in the country.
At Westminster, we work with a non-profit gleaning network, the Society of St. Andrew, to harvest this nutritious food and deliver it to those who need it most. Local gleanings take place at nearby farms and generally involve a couple hours in the morning. They are fun and a great hands-on opportunity for families! Harvest of Hope weekend mission trips are offered through the Society of St. Andrew in surrounding states. Dates and applications for these are found at www.endhunger.org.
