In Our Community
OOTGP Fresh Mobile Markets take place at high need GCS schools and Guilford County food deserts. Each location is served monthly, each FMM serves between 50 - 90 families, and each family receives between 50 – 70 pounds of food. FMM recipients are referred to OOTGP by school social workers. Visit Out of the Garden Project website.
Westminster Presbyterian is launching a monthly Out of the Garden Project volunteer opportunity by supplying manpower for their Fresh Mobile Market on the 3rd Saturday morning of each month beginning May 2016. We will need 6 -8 people each time, the minimum age is 13, and ages 13 – 16 must be with a parent or responsible adult. Sign up to volunteer by clicking here.
When, Where, What?
Each FMM Saturday morning shift lasts approximately 2 - 3 hours. Our duties are:
1.) Meet at 9:45 am at the FMM distribution location. WPC coordinators will email you the location and directions a day or two before our FMM date. OOTGP requests this location be kept confidential.
2.) Help OOTGP employees sort and distribute food to families. This can include: carrying boxes to client's cars, sorting food on the truck and/or on the ground, breaking down excess cardboard, and helping our clients and OOTGP staff as needed.
3.) Follow (in your own vehicle) the OOTGP truck back to their warehouse
4.) Help OOTGP employees unload truck
Heavy lifting is involved but can be avoided if you aren’t able.
Please arrive at the distribution location on time.
Shoes, attire, and hydration: Close toed shoes are required as you will be moving heavy boxes and we want to avoid injuries. We also recommend bringing a pair of gloves and wearing layers! During the summer months it can get pretty hot outside and we will be outside, rain or shine! Water will be provided for FMM volunteers. Please be sure to keep yourself hydrated prior to and during the FMM.
Reminders and last minute info: You will receive a reminder email from SignUp Genius a few days before your scheduled volunteer date. 1 – 2 days before our FMM date, the WPC FMM coordinators will email you the location of and directions to our FMM. Please remember to check your email with this important information.
Also, please do not share the location of your FMM with anyone. The locations need to remain private so OOTGP is not overwhelmed food assistance requests.
